Vasectomy in Drill Monkeys (Mandrillus leucophaeus) - A Population Management Tool
نویسنده
چکیده
Management intervention to avoid inbreeding in captive breeding programs is essential to maintain maximum genetic diversity. Vasectomy was enlisted in drill monkeys (Mandrillus leucophaeus) to achieve this purpose without altering the social dynamics of the groups. All the vasectomies were carried out at the Drill Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre, Cross River State, Nigeria. Vasectomy in drill monkeys and the postoperative results were documented. Twelve drill monkeys were vasectomised between 2001 and 2008; six of the males were vasectomised as alpha males, 3 were ex-alphas at vasectomy, while 3 were males from genetically well-represented lineages. Ten of the animals were wild born while 2 were captive bred. No changes in group dynamics or post-surgical complications were recorded. There was a reduction in drill births in groups where the alpha males were vasectomised.

Recent serological and molecular surveys of different primate species allowed the characterization of several Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) homologues in macaques, African green monkeys, chimpanzees, and gorillas. Identification of these new primate rhadinoviruses revealed the existence of two distinct genogroups, called RV1 and RV2. Using a degenerate consensus primer PCR meth...
متن کاملAssociations between the drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) and sympatric monkeys in Korup National Park, Cameroon.
Studies of polyspecific associations among African forest primates have primarily focused on arboreal Cercopithecus and Procolobus/Colobus species. We examined the association frequency of the terrestrial drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) with six sympatric monkey species in Korup National Park, Cameroon, testing reports that Mandrillus associations are infrequent and transient. We conducted 3,284...
متن کاملGenetic signatures of a demographic collapse in a large-bodied forest dwelling primate (Mandrillus leucophaeus)
It is difficult to predict how current climate change will affect wildlife species adapted to a tropical rainforest environment. Understanding how population dynamics fluctuated in such species throughout periods of past climatic change can provide insight into this issue. The drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) is a large-bodied rainforest adapted mammal found in West Central Africa. In the middle ...

Improving the welfare of nonhuman animals in captivity and maintaining behavioral competence for future conservation purposes is of the highest priority for zoos. The behavior of an aggressive male drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus poensis) was assessed in Barcelona Zoo. The 2-year study presented in this article examined the effects of introducing changes in the exhibit of the drill to improve his...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequences of Mandrillus leucophaeus and Papio ursinus Cytomegaloviruses
The complete genome sequences of Mandrillus leucophaeus and Papio ursinus cytomegaloviruses were determined. An isolate from a drill monkey, OCOM6-2, and an isolate from a chacma baboon, OCOM4-52, were subjected to pyrosequencing and assembled. Comparative alignment of published primate cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) showed variable sequence conservation between species.
